A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
