Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
