European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
