Her Royal Highness's Yearly Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The large audience will hear a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
