The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Haze Post Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI over 500, which translates to 10x the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and New Changes

Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that covers the metropolis as winter approaches.

However recently, the newly elected city leadership petitioned the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe readings recorded during celebrations in at least three years.

International Effects

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Factors

The situation in Delhi is caused by a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the city as cooler air arrives.

Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely mortalities each year in the city.
