Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
