Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared recently, offering a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — getting a brand new toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
An element the teaser avoids is what Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), traveling with a carnival and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about Duke Caboom (the star)?
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
