Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
