When We Observe the Decline of the Craze of Aggressive Cricket, Let’s Appreciate Its Legacy.

The Journey of a Cult tends to be marked by clear stages.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or leaders present a new and transcendent idea that promises a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. An isolated player, naked, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a statement, has come staggering from the field and is being led away under a blanket for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Do you recall the start, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders offer a fresh beginning, optimism ahead, support, redemption together with shared faith in the big idea.

What did it represent initially? Just men on a balcony enjoying success. Tattoos. Forearms. Jawlines. Confident masculinity. Of course, The squad often say Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically as it’s denied, what exactly did I just watch?

But we know what it is. It’s the player attempting a move so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the excitement of Ben Stokes in ultimate mode, a look that says: pensive Nordic god, rugged appearance, untamed style, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to glance over and see him playing in the field shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman continuing to have permission addressing the media, resembling a cheerful animal formally attired, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Development stage. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of key phrases. These beliefs may seem irrational as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The reaction, the outrage, the sense of betrayal post-defeat appears excessive, overdone. England batted badly in Perth, as they often do in Australia. They were torn apart while bowling in a short span when tactics failed, outplayed by Travis Head imitating their style effectively, responsive to the situation, a performer excelling with brilliance.

Now there is the pile-on, the frustration, the sense of English Test cricket as a kind of abomination. The feeling seems to be that England don’t just need to lose, they should be dismantled, to be cleansed, obliterated, destroyed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the simple basics of the veteran, marking his wickets modestly as if receiving a pleasant gift. How will they respond?

4. The Backlash Phase

Issues emerge due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on hatred of the outside world.

In truth, a few days before the upcoming game, we’ve entered a critical juncture in the story of this approach. Victory is possible overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. More likely, failure may follow. Should they fail it seems we could be witnessing the decline.

Ahead of this, a couple of points worth saying regarding this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. Criticism followed, which demonstrated since it’s clear the best way of proving lack of cult status is when its acolytes respond with anger objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

What has happened recently are equally notable. Criticism of the approach has turned into a movement. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas missing out on play, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

Conversely, there is the broader context of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured as one way of separating yourself from others, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a group, a garden party, a restricted environment with centuries of tradition and mystery behind it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the imperial sport of England, the pioneering brand. And surprisingly, the nation has its own culture, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been enclosed in this environment from a young age. In trying to escape from it, to foster positivity, they are just repeating their upbringing, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Focus on the moment. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, things stay similar.

Reflecting on this, it is perhaps the moment to offer compassion for the approach, to recognize its positives, which are significant. How to define it? Encouraging expression. Defying norms. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
